?? Adjudicator Praise
During the on-stage summing up, adjudicator
Dr Bob Childs remarked:
“Had we still been using the points system as in the past, the winning band would have been 2 to 3 points ahead of the rest of the field.”
In the remarks Dr Bob Childs final comments were “This was a top performance in so many ways. Great Soloists, Fine MD, Good Band sound and well integrated percussion. Bravo!”
Dr Brett Baker summed up with this “This was a considered and impressive performance of a difficult piece. A few moments of insecurity, however the approach and appropriate styles really worked well. Congratulations to conductor, band, and soloists.”
Stephanie Binns closing remarks were, “A fantastic performance filled with style, conviction, and music. Brilliant soloists and a great reading from the MD. Thanks all!”
These comments underscored the band’s commanding lead and musical excellence in a fiercely competitive section.
? A Prediction Fulfilled
In a delightful twist of fate, the infamous
4barsrest.com “kiss of death” did not materialise this year.
Their prediction of South Yorkshire Police Band’s victory proved accurate.
Their review of the test piece noting, “There is no doubt that this Bliss score is more than a stern test of technique as well as musical character for bands at this level. There is a deceptive feel and balance to the music — the opening 'Fanfare' bright and majestic, the following 'Dance of Spring' full of youthful spirit and joyful, prickly verve. 'The Approach of Autumn' though would test bands of a much higher level — dark and mysterious with exposed solo lines that intertwine across the band. The 'Summer Dance' and 'Fanfare Coda' offer a return to safer seasons.”
Their commentary on South Yorkshire Police Band’s performance was equally glowing
“The step up in confidence and class from South Yorkshire Police was evident from the start — a controlled 'Fanfare Overture' followed by a lovely youthful lilt to the 'Dance of Spring' that skipped and scampered perfectly, led by the class of an outstanding solo cornet. The approaching darkness of 'Autumn' came with a cloak of mystery as well as solo and ensemble security, closing with a tender chill. The re-energised fizz of 'Summer' and a bold coda rounded off a performance of considerable note.”
? Celebrating Regional Success
South Yorkshire’s musical prowess was further highlighted as
Unite the Union Band, under the baton of
Jonathan Beatty, claimed victory in the
